BOLLYWOOD (BHANGRA) DANCE (grades 2-12)
You’ve seen it in clips of Bollywood Movies or the last scene of the hit film Slum Dog Millionaire. Large groups of ecstatic young people all dancing in synchronized harmony. Now experience it in your school. Bhangra is a fast, lively and rhythmic form of folk dance originating from the Punjab region of Northern India and Pakistan. It began as a folk dance by Punjabi farmers to celebrate the coming of the harvest season. The particular moves of Bhangra reflect the manner in which villagers farmed their land. Bhangra is an increasingly popular dance throughout the world and is often featured at celebrations and weddings. The fast, high energy steps and movements are both exciting and fun to learn. Bhangra has taken the west by storm over the last five years and there is now competitive Bhangra on college campuses across the country.
