Students will create a sculpture of the Brooklyn Bridge by constructing a model with paper and paper mache. They will learn about perspective and scale by drawing the bridge. The students will also learn about the history of the Brooklyn Bridge and how fine artists pay tribute to design professionals in other fields, such as architecture and engineering. Specifically, students will be introduced to the art work of Red Grooms (pictured below), a New York City artist who used humor and abstraction to express his admiration for the original designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, John Augustus. By the end of the residency, students will come to understand and experience first hand the technical challenges of building a bridge, from design phase all the way through to construction.
